As an adolescent, Tom enjoyed playing video games, many of which were violent and graphic in nature. He never demonstrated aggressive behavior or showed signs of trauma as a result of viewing such violence often. However, Tom eventually joined the Army as an adult and witnessed horrific violence in combat. After serving, Tom displayed signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and needed to seek professional help.
Using the principle of nonassociative learning, specifically the ideas of habituation and sensitization as the two main types of nonassociative learning, explain why Tom did not suffer from PTSD as a result of playing violent video games but did eventually suffer from PTSD while serving in the Army.
