We used genetics to test the importance of LPG in mammalian infections. To do this, we knocked out a gene that is
essential for making LPG. As expected, these mutant parasites lacked LPG. We infected mouse cells with equal
numbers of parasites that had normal levels of LPG (LPG+) or with our mutant parasites lacking LPG (LPG-). We then
tested the ability of the parasites to live within the mouse cells by counting the number of parasites per 100 cells at
three time points: 2 hours after infection, 24 hours after infection, and 72 hours after infection.
