Electrical Engineering Professor Dr. Ben Blalock has hired us to determine the length of the power lines between two towers, and the tension in the power line. We do this by sending a longitudinal pulse and then a transverse pulse down the line. It takes 0.20 sec for the longitudinal pulse to return, and 4.2 sec for the transverse pulse to return. The power lines are made of 1.7 inch diameter aluminum wire, with E=10.9x106 psi and weighing 168 lb/ft3.
