The speaker in "The Seafarer" admits that the sea calls to him, draws
him and his thoughts excitedly away from his home. He first reports that
upon the prospect of setting sail, his heart "would begin to beat, knowing once
more the salt waves tossing and the towering sea!" (33-34). He adds, "The time
for journeys would come and my soul called me eagerly out, sent me over the
horizon, seeking foreigners' homes" (35-37). He characterizes his mind as a
