Summative Assessment
Assessed Objectives: Students will be able to write an academic paragraph.
DIRECTIONS: Write an academic paragraph responding to ONE of the two following
prompts. The choice is yours. Both prompts are weighted the same amount of points.
1. What theme do you see emerging from Kindred? Support this with at least two
strong pieces of textual evidence.
2. Write a one-chunk paragraph on who our protagonist is and what conflict they face
in Octavia Butler's sci-fi novel Kindred. Support this with at least two strong pieces
of textual evidence.
Your paragraph should include a hook/lead-in, thesis statement, transitions, two
sets of E&E sentences, and a conclusion sentence. Start with a plan for your paragraph,
Then after meeting with your teacher, write it into a final draft. When you are finished
with the final draft, submit it to your teacher for a conference and discussion.
