The game wasn’t even close. Melissa’s team was losing by 42 points at halftime and they hadn’t made a basket in over ten minutes. Things were looking bad.
Melissa’s friend Emil had come to watch and to cheer her on, but once halftime came, he left. “I can’t stand this anymore,” he told their friend Kacy. “This game is over.”
But Kacy wasn’t about to leave. “Emil, anything can happen! It’s not over until it’s over!”
Emil just waved her off on his way out the door.
In the locker room at halftime, Melissa’s coach gave the team a pep talk.
“You can beat this team!” the coach said. “This game is not over!” Then she told the team about a game she had played in high school. Her team had been behind by 48 points and had come back to win in the second half.
When they came back onto the court, Melissa’s team had more energy. The other team wasn’t trying as hard. They thought they had already won.
Emil came back to pick up Melissa and Kacy a few hours later. He was amazed to hear that Melissa’s team had won the game by 3 points.
“Kacy, you were right!” he said. “It’s not over until it’s over!”
What happens in the story? Pick three.
