In the 16th and 17th Centuries, monarchs ruled with absolute power. Absolutism is a form of government where a monarch rules the land freely according to their own rules. In order to be an absolute ruler, they must meet three characteristics. An absolute ruler is someone who has total control over their country, their power to rule comes from God, and there are no limitations.
The first characteristic of an absolute ruler is total control. This means that one monarch controls every single thing in their country. A ruler who fits this characteristic is King Phillip. Phillip fits this because he had control of the army and navy, he centralized royal power by making all parts of the government his responsibility, and he used that control to heavily tax the Spanish middle class. There are more characteristics that make someone an absolute ruler.
The second characteristic of an absolute ruler is that their power to rule comes from God. This means the ruler believes they can rule and control things because God “gave those powers” and they are his representative. A ruler who fits this characteristic is King Louis XIV. Louis fits this because he believed that “As God’s representative on Earth, the king was entitled to unquestioning obedience.” There is one more characteristic that makes someone an absolute ruler.
The third characteristic of an absolute ruler is no limitations. This means that there are no limits to their ruling/control. A ruler who fits this characteristic is Tsar Peter the Great. Peter fits this because he executed thousands of people who challenged his power. In order for someone to be an absolute ruler, they must have all three characteristics.

Absolutism is a style of government from the past and I think we should never use that style again because it’s unfair for the people of that country. I think it is better to have multiple rulers and multiple opinions.
