Khushi is the office manager for a Grocery Distribution warehouse in a small town called Satna. Khushi's facility is part of a large Delhi-based conglomerate that wholesales and distributes gourmet specialty food products throughout the country. Khushi's been at Grocery Distribution for four years, starting as an administrative assistant in the sales department. She was promoted to office manager 18 months ago and reports directly to the district manager, Sunil. Khushi likes her job. She enjoys her co-workers and hopes to make a long-term career at Grocery Distribution. As a single parent of two young daughters, she was delighted with the salary increase that came with her promotion. Sunil is a new district manager for the Satna facility. He has made some changes in the structure of the organization, which, for the most part, have been well received by the staff. Riya is the receptionist. She works at the front desk, greeting visitors, scheduling appointments and taking care of the mail Khushi is Riya's supervisor. Riya recently went through a difficult divorce, and now she lives alone. Khushi knows that Riya struggles to make ends meet on her receptionist's salary. Outside of work, Riya is active in community theatre. At Riya's most recent opening night, Khushi and several other Grocery Distribution employees were in the front row of the theatre cheering on Riya's starring performance. Riya had some rough patches during the divorce, when she was understandably distracted, but overall, Khushi is pleased with Riya's work. Riya has received positive performance appraisals in the past. Sunil does not like Riya. He claims that she is careless and makes far too many mistakes, and with her casual attire, she doesn't look good at the front desk. "Besides," he says, "she's not really that interested in her job. That community theatre thing takes way too much of her time." Last week Riya requested to take morning off, the day after her opening night, suggesting her absence that morning would be easily covered by other staff. Sunil did not like this, he commented that now she's undependable and insisted that Khushi talk to Riya about it. Given that Riya seldom missed her work, Khushi felt this was not called for and reluctantly spoke to Riya for taking morning off. Following Friday morning, Khushi was called into Sunil's office. It was a busy week because Sunil was getting ready to leave for a two-week vacation. Several projects had to be completed or offloaded to other staff before he left. It was decided that Khushi would take care of some of Sunil's projects while he was gone. Khushi was confident that things will go well in his absence. Khushi was confident that things will go well in his absence. While Khushi was gathering up her papers at the end of the meeting. Sunil said. There's just one more thing. Khushi. While I'm gone, I want you to document Riya's poor performance and write up an appraisal on her. Have the paperwork on my desk ready for me to sign when I get back, and then you can terminate her. I want her out of here within the next 30 days." Khushi was stunned. She knew that Sunil disliked Riya, but she was not sure how she could document Riya's "poor" performance because she believed that Riya was a good employee. Any time she had talked to Riya about Sunil's concerns, Riya had tried to improve. Riya knew that Sunil did not like her, and she had made it clear to Khushi that if Sunil had any problems with her work, she would like to know immediately so that she can correct the problem. "I don't want to lose my job", she had told Khushi several times. Khushi felt that Sunil was trying to use his position in an unethical manner to frame' Riya. The job was important for Khushi and she did not want to displease her boss. But she knew that giving a poor rating would not be correct. A.
