Bruce and the Spider
King Bruce, king of Scotland, sadly lay upon the floor of a lonely cave among the hills. He was anxious, for he was hiding from the English soldiers, who sought to take him to their king. The brave Scots had lost many battles, and Bruce feared that he would never make his dear country free.
"I will give up trying," said he.
Just then, a spider hanging from the roof of the cave by a long thread swung before the king's eyes, and he left his gloomy thoughts to see what the little creature would do.
The spider began to climb its thread slowly, pulling itself up little by little, but it had gone only a short way when it slipped and fell to the end once more.
It would climb and climb, and again and again it slipped back until it had fallen six times.
"Surely the silly little creature will give up trying," thought Bruce. But the spider did no such thing. On the seventh try, it did not fall. Up it went, inch by inch, until at last it reached the roof and was safely at home.
"Bravo!" cried the king. "The spider has taught me a lesson. I too will try until I win."
Bruce kept his word. He led his brave men to battle, again and again, until at last the English were driven back home, and Scotland was free.
Passage 2
The Hare and the Tortoise
The Hare boasted of her own great speed in running and made fun of the slow Tortoise. "Let's race," replied the Tortoise. The Hare agreed, and away they both started together. But the Hare, by reason of her exceeding swiftness, outran the Tortoise and laughed. She found herself a little tired, squatted in a tuft of fern that grew by the way, and took a nap, thinking that, if the Tortoise went by, she could at any time catch up with him. In the meanwhile the Tortoise came jogging on, with a slow but continued motion; he never gave up. The overconfident Hare overslept, and the Tortoise arrived at the end of the race first.
