In "To Build a Fire," the main character thought he could
overcome any challenge. Before the man sets out at the
beginning of the story, a number of old-timers warned him about
the dangers of traveling in extreme cold. The man ignores their
advice. He even called them weak. At one point, he tried to build
a fire to warm up his feet, which froze because he stepped
through thin ice. Snow falls from the branches over him,
however, putting out the fire.
