From the years 711 to 1492, a multicultural mix of Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived
throughout what is now Spain. During this Islamic era, libraries, architecture, and the
arts flourished, and the different cultural groups generally tolerated one another. As the
centuries went by, however, Chrian forces began to take control of Spanish territories.
By 1492, most of Spain was under Christian rule, with Granada as the only remaining
bastion of Islam. That year, Boabdil, the last Muslim ruler of Spain, surrendered to the
Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in Granada. The heritage of the Islamic age in
Spain is still evident in the art and architecture of many Spanish cities.
