Purpose of IR and interpretation of IR spectrum (must be able to distinguish what major functional group is depicted in an IR - major IR absorbances will be provided if you have to interpret a spectrum).
a) To identify functional groups present in the compound.
b) To determine the molecular weight of the compound.
c) To measure the concentration of the compound.
d) To determine the stereochemistry of the compound.
