Meerkats are animals that live in the plains of South
Africa. Its scientific name is Suricata suricatta. These
animals are about the size of a squirrel and have light
brown and gray fur. They have short legs and four toes
on each foot. Meerkats have long nails, small black ears.
dark circles around their eyes, and light fur on their dark
bellies. They are known for their ability to stand upright.
Meerkats live in groups called mobs. Living together
allows them to help and protect one another. For
example, some meerkats stand guard while the other
meerkats are busy doing what they need to do. As soon
as the guard sees a predator, the guard makes a sound
and all the meerkats hide in their burrows.
