Beginning in the 20th Century, historians started referring to the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal Empires as the "gunpowder empires." Supposedly, the origin of this nickname stemmed from their use of guns and cannons to protect and expand their borders and suggests that the main component making these empires was their weaponry. But as you just read, there were a lot of factors that created and maintained the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal empires. What do you think of the term "gunpowder empires" to describe these Muslim powerhouses? Is it a fair assessment?
