Last year, your friend inherited a small bookstore in a rural area in United States from his parents. It is the only physical bookstore in the area and had been doing well financially until about 3 years ago. The store is currently struggling because the change in the behavior of consumers in that area. Primarily, consumers have become much more price sensitive and do not mind waiting for a few days to get the book they like from Amazon when the price on Amazon is significantly cheaper. Your friend has observed this situation and came up with a strategy to compete. He already has a list of the books that match the preference of consumers in that area (i.e., the books that will probably make a sale if they are available in the bookstore). So, he monitors the price of these books on Amazon. Once the price of any books in the list decreases by at least 10% compared to the average price in the last 6 months, he purchases that book from Amazon. Then, he waits until the price increases above the buying price then put the book on the shelf at his bookstore and set the price to be slightly cheaper than Amazon's price. By consistently doing this, he aims to create a reputation that the price at his bookstore is always cheaper than Amazon's. After your friend does this for about 6 months, he observes a major flaw in his strategy. That is, in many occasions, the price decrease on Amazon is "one-way." In other words, once decreases, the price of some books never bounces back. As a result, he ends up with several books that have to be sold at loss. He hears that you are an expert in data mining and reaches out for your help. Please prepare the summary that answers the following questions: 1) Define the problem. What exactly are you predicting/classifying? 2) What data would you need? (i.e., variables, data type, etc.) How are you going to obtain those data? (i.e., data source, collecting method, etc.) Note: • Treat your friend's strategy as given. Do not criticize on the appropriateness of his strategy. • You are allowed to make any assumptions. However, please make sure to justify them. Please make sure to provide a table of each data variable and type that needs to be collected in order to predict which books he should buy.
