The President’s Commission on Highway Safety along with the National Research Council released a report, “Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society” in 1966, documenting six areas severely lacking in emergency care: (1) no treatment protocols; (2) few trained medical personnel; (3) inefficient transportation; (4) lack of modern communications and equipment; (5) the abdication of responsibility by political authorities; and (6) the lack of research evaluating pre-hospital care. Choose one of these six areas and write a short paragraph addressing the following three points:

Name the problem you chose and explain what it means in the EMS system.
Does the lack still exist today to the best of your knowledge? Or, how has it changed in any way?
Why is this area important to an EMT or paramedic today?
