To identify HPV under a microscope, you are instructed to look for koilocytes, mature squamous cells with nuclear and cytoplasmic alterations. First, you look for normal, mature squamous cells to provide a comparison. Normal cells have a single, small nucleus in the center of the cell and lack any further visible structures inside the cell.
