The giant Rocky Mountain chain
stretches all the way from New Mexico to
Alaska. Today, the Rockies are a popular spot
for mining, hiking, and skiing. But in the early
1800s, the Rockies were just in the way! When
settlers headed west, they had a hard time
crossing these steep cliffs. Finally, in the 1840s,
pioneers cut a route through the Rockies called
the Oregon Trail.
