Find the dynamic pressure, volume flowrate, Reynolds number and corresponding friction factor, and pressure drop per 10 m length, for (a) 5 m/s water flow at 20 deg. C in a (round) PVC pipe of 7.5 cm inside diameter (give volume flowrate in gallons per min, GPM and pressure drop in psi), and (b) 5 m/s air flow inside a square 50 cm x 50 cm galvanized metal duct at 100 kPa, 20 C (give volume flowrate in cubic feet per minute, CFM and pressure drop in inches of water). HINT: Use the Moody chart to get friction factor. DISCUSSION: In each case, is the flow LAMINAR, TRANSITIONAL, or TURBULENT--and, why does it matter?
