Indirect characterization uses statements and dialogue to describe a character by providing illustrating examples.

Direct characterization means that the author is describing a character explicitly - he or she is saying what that particular character looks like, what he or she is doing and what other characters are thinking about them. On the other hand, indirect characterization is implicit - you are left to decide on your own what the character is like, based on his or her way of speaking, behavior, symbols, etc.
