6 2/3 - 1 1/4

Solutions

1) Subtract the whole numbers
6 - 1 = 5

2) Simplify fractions 2/3 and 1/4
⇒ Since the denominators are different we have to make them same. To make the denominators same you have to multiply by the least common multiple
≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡

List out all multiples of each denominator, and find the first common one.
3 ⇒: 3,6,9,12
4 ⇒ : 4,8,12

The first common denominator of 3 and 4 is 12 so therefore the LCD of 2/3 and 1/4 is 12.

Both of the denominator are gonna be 12.

⇒ Multiply 3 and 4 until they reach 12.

3 =
3 x 1 = 3
3 x 2 = 6
3 x 3 = 9
3 x 4 = 12

4 =
4 x 1 = 4
4 x 2 = 8
4 x 3 = 12

3 x 4 = 12
4 x 3 = 12

1)  Make the denominators the same as the LCD.
2×4          1 x 3
______ - ________
3×4
        4 x 3

2) Simplify. Denominators are now the same
[tex] \frac{8}{12} [/tex] - [tex] \frac{3}{12} [/tex]

3) Subtract the numerators
[tex] \frac{8-3}{12} [/tex]

5) Simplify
[tex] \frac{5}{12} [/tex]

≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡≡

Simplify

1) Whole number = 5
2) Fraction = [tex] \frac{5}{12} [/tex]

Add them together

[tex] \frac{5}{12} [/tex]
