John ran as fast as he could—he needed to reach the house before any of his cousins. He was blessed with a natural ability to run fast. To his peers, it seemed as though John had invisible wheels attached to his feet or that he was being carried on the wings of the wind. He always beat them, and this time too he was going to be the first to reach home—the first piece of the marvelous marble cake his aunt was baking would be his to take.



Terry looked around and saw that many of his former classmates had turned up for the reunion. At age 35, he was successful and famous, and had managed to fulfill many of the dreams he had had as a lanky teen. Perhaps he was the most successful of them all, he thought, touching the gold cufflinks he wore on his silk shirt.



Cindy could not make up her mind as to which movie she should watch that night. She went online and searched for the latest reviews, browsed through various social networking sites to see what her peers had to say about the latest movies, and called her fiancé Tim to know what he thought. After almost two hours of research and phone calls, she made up her mind. “Pirates of the Caribbean it is,” she told her roommate. “Now what do I wear?”



Lydia was walking rather languidly. She had realized that there was no point in reaching the university so early. Her friend had called to inform her that the first lecture was cancelled. That gave her an extra hour to enjoy the morning breeze and the warm rays of the sun. One hour extra also meant she could stop by Joey’s and pick up a doughnut and coffee.
