A misdemeanor is a crime punishable by "imprisonment up to twelve months".
A misdemeanor is a crime which is not as grave an offence as a felony but is considered more serious than an infraction. Note that misdemeanors, not at all like infractions, are regularly considered "violations of moral turpitude," as they can cause imprison instead of insignificant fines. This difference gives an indicted misdemeanant essentially decreased possibilities for a great job or at time a scholarship.
