Ulysses shooting the arrow through the axe was a significant feat because it was a test of skill with his bow that only he had been able to since no one else was able to master it
It was significant because only one man could string the bow of Odysseus and shoot it. Him shooting the arrow through the Axe handles proved that he was indeed Odysseus only disguised as another. His wife Penelope, knowing that Ulysses was actually Odysseus, made the challenge so she was not forced to choose another suitor for she only wanted Odysseus.
