The gravitational acceleration on a planet's surface is 16.0 m/s2. what is the gravitational acceleration at an altitude of one planet diameter above the surface of the planet?

Hi,

Concept: The acceleration due to gravity for a planet having mass 'm' and radius 'r' is given as

[tex] g = Gm / r^{2} [/tex]--------(i)

Here G is the universal gravitational constant.

Now, we shall find the acceleration(g') at an altitude h = 2r from the given surface of planet.

[tex] g' = Gm / (h+r)^{2} = Gm / (3r)^{2} [/tex] -------using equation(i)

[tex] g' = \frac{1}{9} g [/tex]
Here, the value of [tex] g= 16.0 m/s^{2} [/tex]

So, the required value of g' will be

[tex] g' = \frac{1}{9} (16.0 m/s^{2} ) [/tex]

[tex] g' = 1.8 m/s^{2} [/tex]
