The fish is really old and intense looking, with barnacles and green growth developing on it, and it additionally has five angling snares with the lines still incompletely joined swinging from its jaw.  

The speaker thought about how extreme this fish must be and the amount he likely needed to battle. She starts to regard the fish. The lyric takes its last turn when the oil spillage in the vessel influences a rainbow and the speaker, to defeat with feeling by the fish and the scene, releases the fish.
