Pennsylvania and Virginia

Most German settlers were in Pennsylvania and the western portion of Virginia. There were some in Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and North Carolina as well.

German settlers began arriving in the British colonies during the 17th century. The largest population of Germans settled in Pennsylvania and created the Pennsylvania Dutch and Mennonite populations. German settlers were typically farmers and brought their families to the colonies to create German farming communities.


Most of the German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia.

In the 1670s, significant groups of German immigrants arrived in the British colonies and mostly settled in Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia. Germans continued to immigrate in large droves during the 1800s
