Hi, there. When converting metric units, be sure to think about the memory aid:

King (kilo) * 1000

Henry (hecto) * 100

Died (deca/deka) * 10

Unusually (unit)

Drinking (deci) [tex]\frac{1}{10}[/tex]

Chocolate (centi) [tex]\frac{1}{100}[/tex]

Milk (milli) [tex]\frac{1}{1000}[/tex]

So 35cm = 0.35m

Explanation: This is because meters and centimeters are two place values apart. A centimeter is [tex]\frac{1}{100}[/tex] of a meter.

Another useful way of remembering:

Imagine that the units of measurement and their numbers are two blocks sitting on each end of a scale. One of the blocks on each side is bigger, and the other is smaller. There has to be one big block and one small block for it to balance. Since we know a meter is larger than a centimeter, the meter is the big block on one side, and the centimeter is the small one on the other side. This means that the amount of meters cannot exceed 35, or the scale won't balance.

Hope this helped.

(35 cm) · (1 m / 100 cm) =

(35 · 1 / 100) · (cm · m / cm) =

0.35 m
