During the five years of the journey, begun in 1831, Darwin visited various places of South America (including Brazil) and Australia, in addition to several tropical archipelagos. During the voyage of the Beagle, Darwin made excavations in Patagonia, where he found fossils of extinct mammals. Darwin discovered the fossil of a giant animal, skeletal organization very similar to armadillos that today inhabit the South American continent.In the Galapagos Islands, a group of small islands and situated in the arid Pacific Ocean approximately 800 Km off the coast of Ecuador, Darwin found a highly peculiar fauna and flora, varying slightly from island to island.
