Zitkala-Ša was a Yankton Dakota Sioux author, editorial manager, interpreter, performer, teacher, and political extremist.  

She was a fellow benefactor of the National Council of American Indians in 1926, which was established looking to campaign for Native individuals' entitlement to the United States citizenship and other social equality they had for quite some time been denied. Zitkala-Ša turned into the board's leader until she passed on in 1938.
