Computer generated imagery (CGI) is the usage of computer graphics for special effects in movies, printed, and electronic media. The application tools involved CGI manipulate the environment and produce photorealistic images, which might be useful for the electronic and printed media.

How CGI Works

CGI - Computer Generated Imagery is simply a detailed mimicry or replica of real-world objects, persons, and or scenarios.

CGI programs store and manage data about every object that is programmed into it. Data such as:

  • appearances
  • dimensions
  • qualities and quantities etc.

The program leveraging off the powerful processing power of the computer to display the objects using the data stored about them.

How CGI has benefited Animation

With advancements in CGI, the gap between animation and real-world videos are getting smaller and smaller.

Moviemakers now use CGI and one-stop animation to produce awesome products. Examples include Gromit and Wallace. There are also some ADs that are hyperrealistic that it would be different to tell the difference between a live video and a CGI video.

One benefit of CGI is that is has reduced the costs of producing ADs for business. Companies no longer need to hire photography crews or spend money on transportation or stage creation.
