Islam survived and thus expanded because of the strong believers who formed the umma in the very beginning. To be able to consolidate such a community needs leadership and a “mechanism to fight the dangers and protect the people” who come into the fold of the community(Themes in world History,80). Muhammad had already given the above ingredients to the umma which helped it to grow further. He gave it the rituals and principles to build the cohesion between the people of that community. Muhammad’s strong leadership and his unshakable ideology itself were one of the tools for the successful expansion of Islam.
