SOCIAL INSTITUTION : POLITICAL
MOVIE: ALADDIN
SOCIOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK: CONFLICT THEORY
Analysis:
Aladdin is a 1992 Disney about a homeless man (Aladdin) who meets a princess (Jasmin). This movie has been marked one of the most stereotypical movies of gender and race. The plot of the movie is basically that princess Jasmin needs to get married to satisfy the requirements of the law.
The movie carries a lot of negative stereotypes about the education and status of women in the Arabic region. Jasmin is the only child of the Sultan, supposedly a high standing girl should be educated, but in this case Jasmin doesn´t even know she has to pay money to buy an apple, she doesn´t know the concept of selling and buying. Also she wears clothes that make her look like a belly dancer rather than a princess. The typical stereotype of Aladdin, the poor, homeless guy that steals for his own survival, ends as the husband of a princess and inherits a Kingdom.
