The west traded goods such as copper, gold and salt and in exchange for that they used to get manufactured goods from North America whereas the East were active in their trading routes which settled the first-connection with India and China.

The area which was around Mali in western Africa was among the last trade based empires of Africa and during that period its trade covered areas which were bigger than western Europe and the wealth of these areas mostly came from mining of salt and gold from mines of Sahara. Camels were used as a mode of transportation to carry these resources all across cities of North Africa and the Middle East and then these camels used to come back laden with manufactured goods and led to producing surplus wealth for western Africa.  

One one hand there was western Africa which was trading its way to wealth and fortune, on the other hand, Eastern Africa was following similar path as Tanzania and Kenya which were on the eastern part of Africa were home to series of vibrant and well organized states whose people used to live in houses made up from stones. Merchants used to arrive there as far as from China and India on their magnificent sailing boats and used to set off back with trade goods such as spices, Slaves, etc.
