Boys as young as 11 or 12 years old could become an apprentice to a guild, where they would be taught specific trades by a guild member. The guild member would be compensated by the parents or family of the apprentice. The apprentice would live with the guild master from anywhere between 10-15 years. During that time the guild master would teach his apprentice everything he would need to know to the best of his abilities. During that time the apprentice was not allowed to become married or take part in most other leisure activities as his sole focus was on his trade. Once the apprenticeship ended the boy would be paid a wage and could then start up an establishment of his own, therefore becoming a guild master.
