Because their election and rise to win is based on the electoral college and the electoral college has more representatives based on the number of the population in the state. So if the state is large and they win the majority of that state, they will get all of the votes in the state.
Presidential candidates tend to campaign in states with a high population because these have the highest electoral votes.
The Presidential election works thus:
- The candidate with the highest electoral votes wins
- The electoral votes are decided by the number of seats in the House of Representatives a state has
- The number of seats a state has in the House of Rep is decided by the size of the population
States with higher populations therefore have higher numbers of electoral votes and so can help a candidate win.
We can therefore conclude that more campaigning in done in states with larger populations to capture more electoral votes.
