Respuesta :
‘Scalawag’ was the term that was used to describe a white southerner who supported northern Reconstruction policies after the Civil War.
Further Explanation:
Scallywags were known as ‘White Southerners’ who did cooperation with northern newcomers and black freedmen. The party which they were more inclined to and supported was “Republican Party’. In each state the Republican Party was divided by Scallywags who were more conservative and Carpetbaggers who were considered as ‘Radical’ with the support of their black allies on the other side. Carpetbaggers won in most of the cases which led to Scallywags moving towards more democratic and conservative opposition. During the Reconstruction era that took place after civil war, Scallywags formed their coalitions with northern newcomers and black freedmen because they wanted to take control of the state and local governments. Though they were a group of minorities, they gained power through taking advantage of the laws which were there during reconstruction in 1867. There were allegations made by Democrats in regards to Scallywags being corrupt and Scallywags wanted to support bad government because doing so was in their profit. The main targets of Ku Klux Klan were often from members of Scallywags and Carpetbaggers. During the year 1870, Scallywags joined more democratic coalition after they left Republican Party.
