The concept of "the Holocaust" refers to the ethnic, political, and religious genocide that took place in Europe during the WWII under the Nazi regime. The systematic murders occurred in all the places occupied by Nazi Germany in Europe and it was known in the Nazi terminology as the "Final Solution" to the "Jewish Question".
The decision of taking the genocide into practice was taken by the Nazi authorities in 1941 and the genocide program got its peak in the spring of 1942. Usually, the victims were transported in cargo trains to extermination fields where most of them were killed in gas chambers. The Jewish population of Europe was persecuted and systematically killed. At least 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, in what is the largest genocide of the 20th century. The extermination was not limited only to Jews, but also included persecuting and killing other ethnic groups, political adversaries, and minorities like Gypsies, Polish, Communists, homosexuals, and mental and physically disabled people.
