Appellate jurisdiction refers to the power of a court to hear appeals from lower courts.
An appellate court, commonly called a court of appeal, appeal court, court of second instance or second instance court, is any court of law that is empowered to hear an appeal of a trial court or other lower tribunal. Original jurisdiction is the right of a court to hear a case for the first time. It can be distinguished from appellate jurisdiction which is the right of a court to review a case that has already been heard and decided upon by a lower court. McVeigh was tried, convicted and sentenced to death on eleven counts stemming from the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The bombing resulted in the deaths of 168 people. This case is an example of how an appellate court reviews a death penalty case.
