The Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula lasted for several centuries. One of the big problems for maintaining the rule over the peninsula was that it was never actually conquered in its entirety. There was a small but strong kingdom in the northern part of the peninsula, which was preserving the Christian faith and was also giving hope to the conquered areas. The Cordoba Caliphate didn't lasted long, and because of internal problems it fragmented into smaller kingdoms. This gave an opportunity tot he Christians, so they started attacking the small kingdoms one by one in order to free themselves and kick out the Muslim invaders, and in a very short space of time that did so.
