1. The conservative model, where two old DNA chains remain unchanged, functions as a template for two new DNA chains. This replication preserves molecules from old DNA and makes new DNA molecules.
2. Semiconservative model, where two old DNA chains are separated and a new chain is synthesized with the principle of complementation in each of the old DNA chains. Finally, two new DNA chains are produced, each containing an old DNA molecule chain mold and one new chain resulting from synthesis.
3. Dispersive model, which is some part of the two old DNA chains used as a template for the synthesis of new DNA chains. Therefore, the end result is obtained old and new DNA chains that are spread over old and new DNA chains. This replication produces two old DNA molecules and new DNA that are alternating on each strand.
After successfully modeling DNA structure, Watson and Crick predict that DNA replicates in a semiconservative way. Then in 1958, Matthew Meselson and Franklin Stahl conducted an experiment to test the three alternative hypotheses of DNA replication using the DNA of the bacterium Eschericia coli. The results turned out to support the semiconservative replication model predicted by Watson and Crick.
