Islamic clerics criticized the Shah of Iran mainly because they disapprove his Westernization policies. Islamic groups in Middle East are quite sensitive in their own culture, especially coming from Western, that they think is very liberated.
The demonstrations against the Shah Reza Pahleví began in 1977. It was intensified in January 1978 with the union of religious groups who opposed the modernizing reforms promoted by Sha Reza Pahlevi in a corrupt dictatorship and with a North American influence. As a consequence, an important social discontent was generated, which was taken advantage of by the Shii clergy.
