Crevecoeur's description of an American essentially concentrated on the Europeans who lived in America, a land of freedom and opportunity, leaving out the marginalized Native Americans and people of African descent.

While he encountered slavery, he did not incorporate the slaves in his description of an American. Had Crevecoeur done this, he would have discovered that his description remained unbalanced.

He forgot that Native Americans and African slaves laid the foundation of America with their blood and sweat. Those were also "honest, sober, and industrious" men and women. They could not prosper like their European counterparts because the land then refused to offer them the required opportunity with the "choice of occupation and residence."
