which foreign born continental army officer was considered a brilliant combat engineer and played an important role in many battles especially at saratoga

Respuesta :

Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kościuszko

Explanation:

  • Silas Dean and Benjamin Franklin recruited Kościuszko, who arrived in America in August 1776. He was initially a volunteer, and as early as October 1776 he was promoted to colonel engineer for the Continental Army. He was later  appointed Chief Engineer of the Continental Army.
  • He was sent to Pennsylvania. This is where he first read the Declaration of Independence. He was so moved by the document that he decided to meet in person with the author of the declaration, Thomas Jefferson. They met in Virginia and after close discussions became close friends.
  • His first task was to fortify Philadelphia. He was given the assignment on September 24, 1776, to determine the banks of the Deleware River against a possible British crossing.
  • In the spring of 1777 he joined the Northern Army under the command of Horace Gates. As chief engineer, he commanded the establishment of several fortresses and the establishment of military camps along the Canadian border. His work was a significant contributor to America's successful retreat from the Battle of Ticonderoga and to America's victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777.
  • After these battles, Kosciuszko was considered as one of the best engineers in US service. George Washington entrusted him with engineering work on the West Point Fort on the Hudson River. He subsequently sought to be promoted to the Southern Army, where he also made significant contributions to the American victory.
