Let x = number of white marbles and y = number of yellow marbles.

x + y = 57 => x = 57 - y

Also, x = 3 + 5y

Substitute x for y.

57 - y = 3 + 5y => 57 - 3 = 54 = 6y

So, y = 9

Since x (our answer) = 3 + 5 (9),

x = 48.

Check: 48 + 9 = 57 total
