The physical environment is a basic factor that determines how the people will live. It also influences what kind of a culture they will develop, and in what activities they will engage. The physical environment offers particular conditions, and the humans orientate themselves in accordance to them, as they can only do things that are possible in that environment.

We can take two contrasting examples:

  • Hawaii
  • Finland

The people of Hawaii live on islands. The temperatures are high. There is abundance of water all around them. This has resulted in the people of Hawaii to engage into fishing, swimming, sea travel, surfing. Also, they tend to spend lot of time outside and be much more social.

The people of Finland live in a very cold environment. Summers are fresh, autumn, winter and spring are cold, with high amounts of snowfall. This has resulted in the people to engage into skiing, hunting, reindeer herding. Also, they tend to be much less social and spend as much time possible indoors because of the harsh climate conditions.
