Relief sculpture is beneficial than free-standing when it comes to economic reasons. It is also free from the problems of weight and physical balance that free-standing sculptures have. Being carved directly to the wall makes the relief sculptures suitable for architectural projects.
One drawback for relief sculptures is that it cannot express art in a full circumference. It mostly needs to be halved as it only slightly projects from the background. This can be a limited space for some artists who want to express their art fully (from front to back).
