The so-called "anaconda plan" was designed by General Winfield Scott, right at the beginning of the American Civil War. The plan consisted of blocking all ports of the Confederation, preventing foreign trade and cutting off its naval power. After naval supremacy was assured, a contingent of 80,000 men would move across the Mississippi River to take strategic points in the region, and another new contingent would follow to guarantee the fruits of victory. The end result would be to cut the South in two, preventing reinforcements on both sides and, in the end, isolating the Confederation. Those who supported this strategy made a comparison with the anaconda, which strangles its victims to death, and that ended up christening the plan.
