One of the most celebrated episodes in American history - The Battle of the Alamo began on February 23, 1836. The Alamo was a small Franciscan mission in Texas, defended by the Texans against the oncoming Mexicans.
That was the time when Texas did not yet belong to the United States, but was fighting for its independence from Mexico.
The Texans wanted to establish an independent state in the area, and Mexican President General Santa Anna wanted to prevent them, of course. So he launched his army of approximately 1,500 men and besieged the Alamo.
The Alamo was defended by the Texans (by some sources, 300 of them), among them was famous Davy Crockett.
Although the Alamo fell, its heroic defense and casualties inspired many Texans to continue the fight under Sam Houston defeated the Mexicans and gained independence.
