Confucius was a philosopher and a teacher, not a religious leader, although he was a Daoist. He believed in selflessness and empathy. He also believed that respect for elders, ancestor veneration and family loyalty were the basis for a good government. He also believed that people should be led by virtue so that would create a sense of shame when breaking the law.
